Escape algorithmic music discovery hell. Find real artists through human curation, underground platforms, and communities that actually support musicians.
Thanks for the tips! For fans of classical music, I will leave a self-serving suggestion that they seek out our little blog titled Classical Candor." I would also put in plags for Ethan Iverson's and Ted Gioia's Substacks.
Really love this. So many great resources. It seems like social media is so oversaturated, and the goal for artists is to reach as many people as possible rather than make meaningful connections and build real community. I’m all about starting small with people you really know, which is why I’m here on Substack. Would love to see more of this!! Thanks for posting.
Thank you for this. What a wealth of information. I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your post. Lots of great new information for me here. As a music fiend, I was at my wit’s end and had only just posted on Substack why I was finally quitting Spotify (embarrassingly late), but the points/alternatives I attempted to offer pale in comparison to yours here. I specialize in Latin but I’m all ears and look forward to more of your posts.
Such great tips for finding community! I am fortunate to live in Seattle and be able to be part of KEXP’s (community radio wins!) IRL events, and BandsInTown has been so helpful too!… but I had not gotten around to checking out these other ways to be in music community. Thank you!
Magazines, at least for jazz and classical, is an old school yet effective way to learn about new music.
I would also, add there are public broadcasting networks, jazz clubs broadcasts, and the like on YouTube that showcase new, current, or unrecognized artists.
I have a YouTube profile just for this purpose and I found it has worked as a sometimes, partial algorithm hack.
Thank you!!! I’m a gen z music curator and have been dying for new ways to find music. I used to use YouTube in the early 10s and had crazy success but now it’s just a bunch of AI lofi 🫠 excited to go spelunking
This was enough for me to subscribe. I thank everything for All Songs Considered on NPR, but the treasure trove you've provided is just unique. Thank you for this!
Hello! Juliana here. I'm so touched by your words! Nowadays it's so difficult to find someone that think about music like that, a person who understands the sacredness of music and respects its process. Thanks for your words! Meanwhile here: we'll never give up to spread our words!
I subscribed! Thanks for sharing your blog. Looking forward to seeing your music articles. I used to listen to known punk artists, do not have much information about the old ones. Hope to discover new stuff :)
Oh thanks! Great to hear this, i am trying to share all the best music i always enjoy listening to since 90's. A lot more to go :) Thanks again for this lovely feedback.
